What’s all the buzz with this cloud business? Ed Summers gave us an introduction to commercial cloud services during our February meeting hosted by R&K Solutions.
Virginia Tech is hosting SANS SEC555 “SIEM with Tactical Analytics” at the Blacksburg campus March 11-15, 2019. This lab-heavy course prepares students to use SOF-ELK, a SANS sponsored free SIEM solution, to turn log data into useful information. Deep discounts are available for students and state government employees. Follow the link for course info and registration!

The Cloud! “It’s totally secure in the cloud!” If your manager has uttered anything resembling that phrase, please bring them to the next RISE meeting. We’ll be discussing basic concepts of commercial cloud environments in preparation for a future deeper dive on cloud environment security.

RISE founding member Rob Garbee wowed the crowd with a live demonstration on phishing at this month’s meeting. We saw how a compelling phishing campaign can be set up in a very short amount of time and with very little monetary expenditure. Thanks to our friends at Sycom Technologies for hosting this event at their facility in Roanoke.

The holidays are over, but RISE is ramping up for a new year of presentations and meet-ups. Come out to our first meeting of 2019 to learn about phishing. Rob Garbee will present phishing concepts and show some open source tools to aid your organization’s phishing campaigns.
We had to divert since the SANS Holiday Hack ‘KringleCon’ wasn’t available in time for the RISE meeting. But everyone had a great time at the Blue 5 restaurant! Suds were consumed (the coffee stout was really good!) and security discussed. Topics ranged from OSCP, penetration testing, lessons learned, and on-the-job stories. Everyone enjoyed the fellowship and interesting war stories. Pro tip: Don’t click random authenticator app ‘approve login’ requests when you’re not actually logging in. 😉
If you haven’t already seen it, the Holiday Hack is active! This has always been a great way to pick up some skills and have fun in the process. If you have some free time on vacation this week be sure to log in and check it out.
Thank you for making this another great year for RISE. This marks our third year bringing together InfoSec professionals and enthusiasts in the Roanoke valley and surrounding areas. We hope you have benefitted from the presentations and fellowship, and look forward to more in 2019. Join us, bring your friends and colleagues, and let’s make 2019 an even better year for InfoSec jobs in the Roanoke region! Hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
And as always, if you would like to present at an upcoming RISE meeting send us a note at roanokeinfosec@gmail.com.
We waited as long as we could to make the call, but we’re not sure that the SANS Holiday Hack will be open in time for this month’s meeting. So, fall-back plan!
SECURITY AND SUDS!
Join us at the Blue 5 restaurant in downtown Roanoke for an evening of Security and Suds. We’ll meet at the bar, enjoy some drinks, company, and finish out the year reflecting on InfoSec topics and careers.
After a rough two-month hiatus due to weather, RISE swung back into action with a packed November meeting. Thanks to everyone in attendance and to ECPI University Roanoke for hosting the event! Continue reading
